Artist Profile: Born in 1949 in Bangalore, Karnataka, JM Subramani, commonly known as JMS Mani, is a highly acclaimed artist. He began learning art in 1974 at The Ken School of Art, under the tutelage of the school’s founder, RM Hadapad, with whom he developed a                          deep-rooted bond that influenced his art tre- mendously. He retired from Ken School of Art as the Principal in 2007.   The simple rustic folk of the Deccan Plateau in Southern India, with strong Dravidian   features, are the subjects of his paintings. His figurative works portraying the local Badami people in vibrant colours the pulsating colours in his paintings offset the dark skin of his characters, creating a sense of drama in his compositions and it is his colours and compositions which are expres- sive, rather than the figures themselves.     He is a recipient of The Karnataka State Award 1979, The Karnataka Lalit Kala Academy Award from 1981 and 1983. He has exhibited at various Na- tional and International          venues London, Singapore, New York, Hongkong and Switzerland.
