Born in 1949 in Bangalore, Karnataka, JM Subramani, com- monly known as JMS Mani, is a highly acclaimed artist. He began learning art in 1974 at The Ken School of Art, un-der the tutelage of the school’s founder, RM Hadapad, with whom he developed a deep-rooted bond that influenced his art tremendously. He retired from Ken School of Art as the Principal in 2007.The simple rustic folk of the Deccan Pla- teau in Southern India, with strong Dravidian features, are the subjects of his paintings. His figurative works portraying the local Badami people in vibrant colours the pulsating co- lours in his paintings offset the dark skin of his characters, creating a sense of drama in his compositions and it is his colours and compositions which are expressive, rather than the figures themselves.
He is a recipient of The Karnataka State Award 1979, The Karnataka Lalit Kala Academy Award from 1981 and 1983. He has exhibited at various National and International ven- ues London, Singapore, New York, Hongkong and Switzer- land. He has participated in 43 group shows, the SAARC Exhibition in Bangalore, The Bharat Bhavan International Biennale of Prints in 1989. He currently lives and works in Bangalore.
